  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The original plans for a breakaway league collapsed in 2021 when fans protested vociferously, but the group behind the attempt – Madrid-based A22 Sports – is back with the rebranded 'Unify League', a 96-team competition spread across four divisions.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    A22 is supported by La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, and will try to convince fans by providing a free-to-air streaming service with adverts. According to , A22 has written to UEFA seeking official endorsement of the new league – which could begin by the 2026-27 season should European football's governing body approve it with no issues.

    Ninety-six clubs would feature in the Unify League, divided into four leagues. The top two leagues, 'Star' and 'Gold', would each have 16 clubs, split into groups of eight. The 'Blue' and 'Union' leagues would contain 32 clubs each, also divided into groups of eight.

    "The format is entirely meritocratic and very clear. And we feel the right next step is to seek official recognition from UEFA. It's also our way of saying we don't want a fight. The very name of the league shows we want to take a more peaceful approach," A22 told GIVEMESPORT.
